Icky bugs and doujinshi dreams.
Feb. 11th, 2003 11:29 pmHad a really freakin' weird dream earlier today. It's also the most vivid dream I've had in a while, so I thought I'd make a record of it.
Anyway, the gist of what I can recall was that I was napping in my parent's bed (which was exactly what I was doing IRL), when for some unknown reason, I got up to examine these two (large) portable electric fans that were on the floor next to me (apparently, these were used in the room during the summer months). One of them had the casing split in two (as if someone had opened it to fix it), so I check it out.
Much to my surprise (and disgust), I find this huge, nasty pile of these gigantic maggots (REALLY huge, like catterpillars, except that ugly maggoty-white color - I can't even imagine the size of fly these things could become) and earthworms inside the fan. Mostly there were maggots, though (which was the bad part, because earthworms are pretty harmless and them alone I think I could've handled).
I start to freak out a bit, because I'm thinking "Oh no! They'll spread all over our home!" I tell my dad (who was sitting next to me on the bed, apparently reading his newspaper), but he doesn't seem too worried about it. My mom comes in at that moment, so I show the pile to her. She's disgusted too, and starts looking in the bathroom for (I assume) bug spray or something else to kill them with. She's taking her sweet time doing this, though, which causes me to start becoming impatient and even more freaked out ("Dammit mom, they'll be all over the place by the time you find that!"), and I start to dash to the kitchen (which felt like it was further away than it actually is IRL) to get something to kill them with.
On the way there, I find one maggot already crawling in the hallway towards my room ("Damn, how'd it get here this fast?!"), which makes me freak out even more, thinking "Nooo, my books will be ruined!" (more on "the books" in a bit). I quickly squish this one with my sandal and move on, before things get worse.
So, I make it to the kitchen, to find a pile of dirty laundry (I guess mom was sorting it before she went to the bedroom?) at the foot of the door leading to the laundry room in our apartment (again, layout of the place is exactly the same as it is IRL), and what do I find crawling on top of the dirty sheets? Yes, ANOTHER one of those giant maggots! ("FUCK, they've made it all the way over here too?!") Anyway, now I'm even MORE worried about the fate of these books of mine, so I quickly look behind me and to the side, and find a can of Raid roach spray. I use this, since I can't find anything else (and figure that any bug poison is better than none), and it seems to work - the maggot does this sort of slow-motion deflating/stretching out thing in its death throes. It even stretches a little human-ish arm out of its body, as if crying out for mercy or something (where'd this image come from is beyond me - anyway, I saw it all really clearly, as if my mental "camera" had zoomed in on the maggot right then).
I'm pretty satisfied, and am about to take off to kill the other bugs, but THEN I notice another maggot crawling on top of the sheets. ARGH! So, I start spraying this one, when I notice that on the floor next to the pile, there's a roach (It was an odd roach, because it looked more like a beetle and was this shiny blue-black color rather than brown-black, but my dream-self identified it as a roach.). Now, if there's one thing I'm really goddamn phobic about, it's roaches, so I try not to scream (too much) and spray it too - even though it wasn't crawling around, just sorta looked like it was twitching its antennae (it could've actually been the wind making it look like they were moving, I don't know).
The roach doesn't seem to react to the spray at all, which starts to worry me. At the same time, it seems like the dirty sheets shifted a teeny bit (maybe I stepped on one end and moved them?), because now I spot ANOTHER roach like this one peeking out from under some of the folds. NO! So I start spraying this one as well, which AGAIN doesn't seem to work, and at the same time, I find yet another of these roaches close to where the other was! And the spray still doesn't seem to have any effect on them, and they just sit still where they are, simply twitching their antennae, and by now I'm screaming in terror and pleading for them to die, and... and....
...and that's right when I woke up, thankfully. I don't know how much more of that I could've taken.

Anyway, here's where I recall the books from my dream, and I realize that these are actually part of a previous dream (I just can't recall if it was an earlier dream in the sequence today or if it's really an older dream from previous days or whatnot. @_@). In fact, the books were so vivid to me that when I woke up, I was confused as to whether they really did exist.
So, these books I was so worried about in the bug dream: All I can recall is that I apparently bought all of them in a local bookstore. Some were apparently just doujinshi for my collection (At a bookstore in Puerto Rico? HAHAHAHAHAH definitely a dream.). The one that really stood out, however....
It was pretty thick, almost like a textbook. I think it was brown, but I don't remember if it was hard or softcover. As for the subject, it was this one big study of the whole doujinshi phenomenon. The author didn't seem to be a fan, or if he was, it was only the casual sort, since the book was more about the social aspects of the fandom and the mentality of the fans and artists/circles (including random interviews with some of them) than a fan raving on why doujin are cool, which leads me to think that maybe the author was more like a sociologist or something.
Aside from the study, the book was filled with other stuff like essays written by some of the fans and doujin-ka for wildly varying fandoms with their own observations on the subject, and a few frivolous extras, like predictions on what the "next big thing" the majority of doujin-ka were going to be releasing fanworks of in the next year (sort of like a "top ten").
Other than that, I can't recall any other details offhand about the book. All I remember is that my dream-self thought it was the Coolest Book EVER. And actually, just from all this I can recall, I'm inclined to agree that it was indeed, very interesting. So much, in fact, that when I woke up, I seriously believed it was real for a good while (like more than 15 minutes) before my brain settled down and let me go over things properly. O_O

Anyway, I have no idea what any of this could mean, if it has any meaning at all (Or maybe it just means I need to find something better than the cardboard boxes to keep my doujin in. ^^;;). Anyone want to take a crack at interpreting it?
