Well, the PS2 did the same thing (the controls not responding) last night (the 12th) when I tried turning it on without a game, so the problem's obviously the PS2 (or maybe the controller, but whatever). So I said to myself "fuck it, just get a new PS2 - it's currently just $130 for a new one, and they probably won't lower the price that much more anyhow, even with the PS3's release."

So, after trading the old one in, now I have a new PS2. And it's TINY. I really can't believe just how COMPACT this thing is next to the old model. That midget guy (Reducto?) from Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law would die from admiration at how small this thing is.

And to further put a dent into my wallet, I also picked up three more games: Tales of the Abyss, Shadow Hearts, and Shadow Hearts: Covenant ([livejournal.com profile] ruaki, you are a bad, bad influence. ;D). The latter two I picked up from the used bin (Though they were expensive even from the used bin - almost $40 each. Must be because they're kinda rare.).

Now I just have to figure out what to play, as I still have Yakuza, not to mention the enourmous backlog of unfinished games I already had before that. Eep. ^^;

Is it the skinny, flat one? Or is it even smaller somehow?

I remember the first time the ex came home with his... I was astounded, it was so small! :D

No, it's the skinny, flat one they came out with... maybe a year and a half ago? Two years? And it opens from the top. Anyway, it's that one.

SO TINY. I'm afraid I'll break it! :O

I don't like the fact that it doesn't come with an off switch like the original model did, though. You have to unplug it if you're not going to use it for long periods of time. (Ah well, I'll just switch off the multi-outlet/surge protector I have it hooked up to. No skin off my nose.)

Yea, that's the one! I was always scared I'd break it, too. I still have my old clunker, but it's back at my parents' house.

I thought for some reason that if you REALLY held down the button, it'd go off.

But maybe it was just hibernating all that time! Shows what I know about modern gaming systems, sigh...

No, according to the installation guide (which I consulted after I couldn't find the freakin' on/off switch anywhere, but had figured out how to turn it on with the Reset button, and was left wondering how the hell you turned it off), holding down the Reset button just makes it go into Standby mode. Which the guide says is okay to leave on if you use it regularly, but if you're going to not use it for a while, then they recommend unplugging it.

Since I tend to sometimes not-play for stretches of time, I'm doing just that (well, turning off the outlet it's on, at least). Still, what a weird system. O_o

Welcome to the backlog sisterhood!

Tales of the Abyss is out already? DAMMIT. I CAN'T AFFORD THIS HOBBY ANYMORE.

Haha, I was in the backlog sisterhood AGES ago. I just never mentioned it. I still have PS1 games I've never finished, fer cryin' out loud! XD

And yeah, ToA came out on Wednesday, IIRC. With a little laser cel if you preordered it (I hadn't, so I didn't get it. Woe, no free swag for me. :( ). I played a TEENY bit of it just now, and it seems alright. Haven't formed any real opinion of it yet, though. I think I'll be alternating between playing this and playing Yakuza, heh... :D

Yeah, it really is super tiny! It's just about the size of a Wii, isn't it? Thing is, I heard that they're actually redesigning the redesigned PS2 (or PSTwo, or whatnot) to make it look more like the PS3. Well, I'm happy with this slim boxy one.

I haven't really seen what the Wii looks like (save for a part of its front in the promo poster I saw at Babbage's - I noticed it's white, but that's about all I paid attention to ^^;), so I have no idea how small that is. I hope it's pretty small - I'm going to run out of room to put my game systems in if it isn't. :O

Dude, they're redesigning the PS2, even though it'll be soon on its way out? Sheesh. Well, at least there won't be a shortage of them anytime soon, in case this new one goes bust quickly.

...I do hope they put back the damn off switch if they go ahead with the redesign, though.

From official statements, as well as those of people who've actually seen the system, the Wii is supposed to be really tiny as well. About the size of a couple of DVD cases stuck together!

I don't know if they plan on the PS2 going out anytime soon, though, even though the PS3 IS supposed to be just on the horizon. The PS2's getting a bunch of neat games, even at this stage of its lifecycle! I guess it just makes sense for developers, since the PS3 will be backwards-compatible and there's no telling just how many people will own a PS3 in the next few months.

I've had friends tell me about how some people just don't seem to "get" that on/off switch on the old PS2, though. It was certainly true with my old roommates! I guess having that switch on the back AND the power button in the front is too much for some people. It's probably no big deal to remove the switch... I'm not sure how much power the system eats in sleep mode, but I don't think it's too much. But then again, aren't some groups already complaining about how future systems will be draining power in sleep mode, such as the Wii with its 24-hour "Wii Connect" service?

I dunno! I guess the solution these days is just to physically unplug the system...
